What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is an authentication (Certification) from the Secretary of State’s office that the public official who signed your documents (a Notary Public or a County Clerk, for example) is really an acting public official, and that the signature appears to be genuine. The Secretary of State verifies the signatures on file, in addition to verifying the capacity of the signer. The Apostille is issued in accordance to an agreement which was created at the Hague Convention in 1961. For the State of California, the Secretary of State’s office is the official issuer of Apostilles in California.
What is an Authentication?
An Authentication from the Secretary of State’s office is the same process as getting an Apostille, except that the receiving country does not accept Apostilles (because they do not subscribe to the Hague Convention of 1961). On this document, the Secretary of State certifies the capacity of the public official who has signed the document, and states that the signature appears to be genuine. These documents generally require further authentication (by the receiving country’s Consulate or Embassy) in order to be accepted for use in the receiving country. As an extra provided service, we offer Consulate Authentication Services for the consulates of China and Brazil.
In this Section, we will use the word "Apostille" to mean either Apostille or Authentication by the Secretary of State, since the process and cost is the same for each. .

Shipping of Documents
We can ship documents back to you, or wherever you want. We normally ship most documents using USPS Priority Mail for free. We will ship your documents via Fed Ex within the U.S. for $30. We can ship with your UPS account, but we don't like to because UPS does not offer insurance or declared value protection for documents. If you choose to use UPS anyway, you must pay us with cash or check, and you must know that your order is completely nonrefundable if UPS loses or destroys your shipment.

What kind of documents do you get Apostilles for?
Answer: we get Apostilles on all kinds of documents, including Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Marriage Dissolutions (on Certified Court Documents from the California Superior Court) and any documents from the California Superior Court which are signed by the Clerk or a Judge, and notarized documents including Power of Attorney, School Transcripts, Diplomas, Photocopies of Passports, Photocopies of any documents, Criminal Background Checks, and more. We can also get Apostilles on documents which have the Governor's signature, including Diplomas of the University of California campuses, and the California State University campuses.
What is an Apostille, and why do I need it?
Answer: An Apostille is document from a local authority (in this case, from the California Secretary of State) which is attached to your document, which assures the people in the receiving country that the person who signed your document is acting in their legitimate capacity. For example, it tells the receiver that the document was really signed by a County Clerk, Judge or Notary Public. Apostilles are accepted by countries who subscribe to the Hague Convention of 1961. Apostilles are not accepted by all countries, but are accepted by all countries which subscribe to the Convention. Apostilles are also issued by the U.S. Department of State for documents signed by federal public officials. We only obtain Apostilles from the California Secretary of State. For countries that don't accept Apostilles, the Secretary of State issues an authentication document that says "Certified". In order to be accepted in the other country, this document needs further authentication, usually from the receiving country's Consulate or Embassy.

Legalization Services
For documents which need to be legalized at a Consulate, , the total charge is $90 for the first document and $10 for each additional document, plus the Consulate’s Fees. You will receive the document when the legalization process is complete (it can take a week or more sometimes, depending on the country's Consulate). You will be advised when the documents will be ready after our visit to the Consulate. We visit the Consulate General’s office of China in Los Angeles, California, the Brazilian Consulate in Beverly Hills, California, the Consulate of Chile in Los Angeles, the Consulate of Taiwan in Los Angeles, the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles, and the Consulate of Belgium in Los Angeles. Why You May Need An Apostille or Certification
If your official certified or notarized documents are going to be used outside of the United States, they will frequently need an Apostille or Certification.
