Can I get an Apostille (or Certification) myself?

Yes, you can also get an Apostille from the Secretary of State in Sacramento yourself, by mail (this is easy, but it takes 2 weeks approximately to receive your Apostille).

You can also visit the Secretary of State's office in Sacramento, in person. There you can have your Apostille processed same-day, during their normal business hours.

If your document is an official State of California document or is signed by a County Clerk in the State of California, the document can be taken to (or sent to) the Secretary of State's office directly to obtain the Apostille (or Certification). These documents do not require notarization or authentication by a County Clerk before arriving at the Secretary of State's office.

You can get an Apostille for notarized documents by taking your document to the County Clerk in the County where the Notary has his/her commission, and they will authenticate the signature. Then you would take the document to a local office of the Secretary of State, and they will give you the Apostille (or Certification). (The County Clerk and Secretary of State charge the fees mentioned above. The fees are subject to change- please check with those offices for exact fees).
